Postpartum Doula Support
POSTPARTUM DOULA SERVICES
Postpartum doulas usually start working with the family within the first few months after birth, though some doulas also work with families whose babies are older. Sometimes postpartum doulas are booked during the antenatal period, and sometimes they step in when the family is struggling or needs more support. The time a postpartum doula spends with a family varies widely, from the first 6-8 weeks to years!
Postpartum doulas provide emotional, practical and informational support to clients in the postpartum period, as well as helping them in other ways.
One of the biggest benefits of a postpartum doula is that she supports the family like one of their own. This includes looking after the baby while the mother (and her partner) sleep, helping older siblings, getting them ready for school, preparing snacks... helping parents sleep more comfortably at night... it covers everything needed to help a family relax and have a positive experience with their baby.
If you choose to breastfeed, a doula can support you with this, and research shows that having a doula in the postpartum period increases your chances of successfully continuing to breastfeed.
Postpartum doulas also provide emotional support to mothers and couples. Nowadays parents can feel overwhelmed by the different advice they’re given. A postpartum doula gives new parents the chance to talk everything through and just chat. Talking about the birth is a normal part of this, but postpartum doulas can also support parents with concerns about topics such as siblings, nutrition, returning to work, sleep, and what grandma does during the day.
Fee: Support is provided to the family in the postpartum period through 8-hour visits, 5 days a week. Baby massage and baby care are done every other day. I let the mother rest, observe and support her breastfeeding. I contribute to daily household tasks during the day. My job description is set out in more detail in the contract.
