A doula's role is to help the mother feel safe and comfortable during the birth process. Before birth, the doula meets with the mother to learn about her needs, fears and expectations, discusses her birth preferences and specific wishes, and stays by her side throughout.
Emotional support: meeting the mother's emotional needs and staying by her side continuously, so she feels strong and supported.
Information: clear information about the birth process so mother and partner can make informed decisions, explaining medical situations to help her relax.
Physical support: helping the mother cope with labour through massage, breathing exercises and comforting positions.
Postpartum support: breastfeeding guidance, baby-care knowledge and support for recovery, for a healthier postpartum period.
